While it is important to know the things which are necessary during pregnancy, it is of equal importance to know the things which should be avoided while a woman is in a delicate phase in her life. Know the things to avoid during pregnancy for a safer journey into motherhood.

One of the most harmful things to avoid during pregnancy is cigarettes. Avoid smoking cigarettes as well as second hand smoking. The nicotine content of cigarettes and tobacco is very detrimental to the health of the baby. Also, because second hand smoke has passed through someone else’s lungs before coming to you, secondary smoke should also be avoided. There might be viruses and bacteria which can bring birth defects and inborn diseases to the baby.

Alcohol from liquors and wines should also be avoided during pregnancy. They also bring birth defects, mental retardation, learning disabilities and emotional problems. It can also psychologically affect the pregnant mother to the point of developing stress and depression. Why not drink water and fresh fruit juices which are refreshing and nourishing for you and the baby?

A strenuous activity is yet another one of the risky things to do during pregnancy. Performing heavy activities like pushing, pulling and lifting and any other activities which may require the exertion of too much force may cause miscarriage. If possible, ask the help of another individual, especially your husband, to perform heavy tasks for you.

Do not forget to include radioactive exposure to the list of the harmful things to avoid. Radioactive procedures such as x-rays as well as photocopying may induce birth defects. It can lead to genetic mutation resulting into a baby with obvious deformities and abnormalities.

Furthermore, apparently the most unethical of the things to avoid during pregnancy is intentional abortion. Taking abortion pills and undergoing processes such as catheterization to induce bleeding and eventual miscarriage is deemed unlawful when done without the consent of licensed medical professionals. It is a law in most states that an abortion must be reasonable and be supported by prescriptions of duly authorized doctors.
