A lot of people look at DNA testing with high regard because of its extreme reliability despite a small percentage of uncertainty. After perfecting the process, it has long been used as an indispensable and conclusive tool to prosecute offenders and criminals. DNA testing is based on the premise that every person has a unique set of DNA. As such, it can never be denied that a certain hair, blood or skin sample belongs to that person. DNA samples are vital components in any crime investigation or paternity issue because it is a key to the fast determination of those really responsible.

In a crime scene, trained officials can brush off the rims of cups, cigarette ends, forks, knives or any other materials, which might come in contact with the human tissues. For victims of rape or any serious sexual assault, the body fluids left in the victim can be obtained as well for DNA sampling. Moreover, the undersides of the victim’s fingernails can be scraped for samples. The process of obtaining specimen from the victim and the crime scene is relatively easy and without resistance. However, before the suspect can be subjected to DNA analysis, a consent form must be signed. As such, he or she can refuse leading to delays in the investigation process. In conjunction with DNA samples, other evidenced still need to be presented in court because as a rule, DNA cannot be deemed accurate solely in its own rights.

Once the samples are obtained, they can be immersed in a solution of salt, chloroform and phenol. Then, in the laboratory, the DNA is heated so the double helix will split into 2 halves. It will be cooled afterwards until it forms a new set of building blocks. Each cell carries a 6 feet DNA helix that is viewed under the electron microscope. After this, the barcode DNA will be immersed in a gel or nylon membrane so they can be segregated. The membrane will then be placed between x-ray films. The product is called an autoradiograph.

From these medical breakthroughs, many crimes and paternity issues are solved. Indeed, the human ingenuity is beyond comparison since scientists and medical experts are able to dig deep into the human body for real and undeniable identification markers.
