Personality Test: TAT and Ink Blots

There are a lot of tests that people take nowadays - entrance exam tests, drug tests and etc. These tests are used to enter a university or school, to check on health problems and also to check on a person’s mind stability and character. One of these is the so-called personality test.

TAT is also known as the picture interpretation technique. TAT uses a series of ambiguous pictures that are provocative. For the standard TAT there are 31 pictures. Some cards show male, while some female, some has both male and female pictures. Other cards have ambiguous gender, children and while some have no human figures. Among the 31 cards is a card, which has no picture at all - it is completely blank.

However not all the 31 cards are used? Usually only about 10 cards are used depending on what they think is useful to the test taker or what they think will encourage more expression from the taker. The test taker is asked to tell a dramatic story that they think the picture represents. Within the story, they are ask what the reason for that event is, what is happening, what the outcome of the story is and what the characters in the picture is thinking and feeling.

Meanwhile the Ink blots, which is also known as Rorschach ink blots, Rorschach technique or Rorschach test is a psychological test wherein the test taker’s views of the inkblots are recorded then analyzed using an interpretation that could be psychological or scientifically derived. Some psychologists use this type of test to examine a person’s personality, emotional functioning and characteristics.

Psychologists believe that it can identify an underlying disorder in the thoughts or abnormal condition of the mind. This is used in cases where the test takers are reluctant to describe or be honest about what they think. According to some surveys the use of this kind of personality test has been used by about 20% correctional psychologists, 80% clinical psychologists engaged in it and 80% psychology graduates teach it.
