Personality development is the process by which a continuing characteristic of an individual is formed throughout a specific time frame under several conditions. One’s personality constantly changes and will not cease to change unless every factor in the environment stops changing. There are a lot of factors that contribute to one’s personality. One is heredity which basically works on a biological level, and of course external factors that hone or polish a man’s way of living and interacting. A person might think that since it takes a whole lifetime to establish a personality, it would be very difficult if not impossible to alter ways or attitudes that had been long carved in a person’s system. But this is not the case when you hear the principles behind NLP training.

Before you start to change yourself, you have to first understand why you have that certain personality or act in a certain way. This is because of the idea of meta-models. The meta-model is an individual’s map that is used in NLP training courses. Meta-models have three kinds, namely, deletions, generalizations, and distortions. To understand more about the meta-models, you can check out the following list.

* Meta-model deletions. As the name suggests, meta-models delete some things that are a part of the world’s reality to make the world easier to manage. For instance, meta-model deletion allows you to read a book in the living room even though your children are playing and your partner is watching TV in full volume. This allows you to concentrate on one particular activity and delete others from your mind.
* Meta-model generalization. Generalizing means you categorize and organize your experiences to make them more manageable. Fr example, when you talk about dogs, you do not just talk about all the individual dogs that you have met. You generalize your ideas of dogs to make it easier to communicate your ideas to other people. Generalizing also allows you to use certain knowledge to different situations. For example, once you have opened a door using a door knob, you will do the same thing to doors that you have never seen before. You do not need to re-learn how to use door knobs.

* Meta –model distortions. This is probably the aspect of meta-models in NLP courses that causes many problems. Although distortion allows you to plan or visualize things in the future such as planning a trip, decorating a home, or buying new furniture, it becomes a problem when you imagine negative things instead. One example of negative distortion is being jealous because you imagine that your partner is cheating on you and behaving as if it is real.
