Anxiety is a feeling we all share as normal human beings. It is just about as natural in humans as any other emotions such as happiness, anger, or fear. How many of you felt your heart drop at the sudden knocking at your door in the middle of the night? Anxiety is just another form of fear, a fear of an uncertain future looming just ahead brought about by some distressing experiences facing the same situation in the past. Situations that can trigger feelings of anxiety can be far-ranging, from social situations like a forthcoming speaking engagement to a simple name recall. Most of these are just mundane in the eyes of many but certainly not for someone who has painful associations with it. It is biological to some extent, for animals also exhibit such behavior. But when your anxiety attacks become chronic and irrational, you should seek medical consultation for it could gravitate into something worse. Medications for anxiety problems are varied and very much available but these cannot be regarded as anxiety cure. These are mainly for short-term treatment of anxiety symptoms such as:
• Nausea
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Stomach cramps
• Palpitations
• Difficulty in breathing
• Chest pains
• Irritability
Medical treatment for chronic anxiety attacks involves prescriptions of certain drugs to alleviate symptoms of anxiety. There are several types of prescription drugs available today for chronic anxiety attacks, and these are the following:
Anti-anxiety drugs
These are commonly known as tranquilizers, the most popular, and have been used for the longest time as treatment for anxiety symptoms in patients suffering from anxiety or panic attacks. The popularity of these prescription drugs is due mainly for their calming effects brought about by the slowing down and relaxing of the CNS (central nervous system). Because of this, anti-anxiety drugs are also prescribed as muscle relaxants and sleeping pills. Some of the most prescribed anti-anxiety drug brand names include Valium, Xanax, Ativan, and Klonopin.
Antidepressants
These drugs, commonly prescribed for depressed patients are also found to be effective in alleviating symptoms of anxiety. However, the effect of these types of drugs is not immediate. It usually takes four to six months of continued use before the patient feels its full effect, so it is not recommended for someone who is already exhibiting serious anxiety symptoms that require immediate medical attention. Antidepressants are mainly prescribed for long term treatment of chronic and continuous anxiety attacks.
Beta Blockers
Beta blockers are previously prescribed exclusively for the treatment of hypertension and heart ailments but have been found to inhibit certain anxiety symptoms such as palpitations, shaking hands, perspiration, trembling voice and nausea. These drugs are now prescribed for patients who suffer from chronic social and performance anxiety problems, such as public speaking, to help ease nervousness.
Although these prescription drugs are widely prescribed and widely used, they are also widely abused, for most of these, especially the tranquilizers, are highly addictive when used inappropriately. It should be emphasized that these are not wonder drugs for anxiety cure; they are just for temporary relief. We must revert to the comforting support, care and guidance of the ones we love and own spirituality to finally banish away our irrational feelings of anxiety.
