Since time immemorial, books have been a way for people to present and to preserve their thoughts. Just think about the different kinds of literature that came out from Ancient Greece and during the Renaissance period or better yet think about Christianity and how effectively it has passed on the teaching of Christ and the Apostles through the ages through a single book called the Bible.

Words undoubtedly have power and writing a book is a tool that any person with a message to convey should take advantage of. Whether you are a teacher, a researcher, or a preacher, writing a book will greatly benefit your mission of sending out your message to its intended audience. But with so many books being published every year, and with only 10% of these books managing to get 90% of the sales, you might be wondering if publishing a book is the thing for you. After all you already have so many concerns such as a tight schedule, difficulty in writing and an equally tight budget how is it possible to get your book published? Simple. The answer is in self publishing.

Self publishing is for you if you have limited resources, if you want creative control over the whole process, and if you want the work done quickly. You may be thinking that this approach will greatly limit the impact and reach of your book, but consider these authors who previously self published - Benjamin Franklin, Thoreau, Mark Twain, Stephen King – they only show that it doesn’t matter whether you start small, the important thing is that you are able to finish big. And how exactly does one finish big in self publishing? Here are some key ideas that you can apply through each of the main steps of publishing.

Writing. Being organized is the key step if you want to produce great material for your book. Answer first the pertinent questions about why you want to write, what is it you want to write about, and for whom before you even begin to write your first word. Once you’ve gotten that out of the way pick a topic to write about, make it something you are passionate about and then center all your brainstorming around that topic. It will also be good to have the essential tools any writer should have right within your reach.

Publishing. Three things to consider in publishing are the layout design, the book cover, and the pricing. You should have a lot imagination and creativity when dealing with these things. It is also advised not under price your books, because it will be harder to increase their price once they sell well.

Marketing. The most important part of publishing is marketing. The sales of your book will greatly depend on how well you market it. You should set aside a lot of time and money for this process. Know of your target market and the places where you can sell your books. Build relationships with local bookstores and employ the support of at least a hundred people from the list of your contacts. Also, never underestimate the power of other forms of media. Send press releases to TV stations, community libraries, etc.
