The popular online advertising site Craigslist has been beset by controversy in recent years due to the emergence of several murderers given the name "Craigslist killer" by media because they allegedly met their victims through ads posted on the site. The most famous of these killers is Philip Haynes Markoff (February 12, 1986 – August 15, 2010), who was charged with robbing and murdering Julisa Brisman, who had posted an ad on Craigslist offering erotic services. Markoff, who was seen as being responsible and a good citizen, was also charged with two other armed robberies. He maintained his innocence and entered a plea of not guilty during his arraignment. While detained in Boston’s Nasuha County Jail awaiting trial, Markoff was found dead on August 5, 2010, an apparent suicide.

Before Markoff, Michael John Anderson was the first murderer to be dubbed a "Craigslist killer" when he was tried and convicted for the murder of Katherine Ann Olson on October 2007. Anderson had seen Olson’s Craigslist ad offering her services as a nanny. Anderson created the false identity of a married woman named Amy and lured Olson to his parents’ house on the pretext of a job interview, then shot her in the back.

The most recent killer to hold the name is the Long Island Craigslist killer, whose murder rampage so far is believed to total four women, two of who are reported to be prostitutes who used Craigslist ads, and whose bodies were dumped along a remote beach road. One of the alleged victims, prostitute Shannan Gilbert, had placed a 911 call on the day of her disappearance claiming that she feared for her life and that she was trying to escape from her client. Shannan’s mother, Mari Gilbert, said she had been contacting police over her daughter’s disappearance but had been ignored until it became clear that Shannan may have been the victim of a serial killer. The man Shannan named in the 911 call is seen as a crucial lead in the case.

If these incidents have made you concerned about the safety of placing or replying to a Craigslist ad, a new service can help give you peace of mind. CraigGuard can help alert you to questionable and possibly dangerous Craigslist posters. Keep in mind that Craigslist has no safety features similar to eBay’s user ratings to warn users against unscrupulous Craigslist ad posters. To use CraigGuard, all you have to do is get the real name, address and other particulars of a buyer or seller you’re planning to deal with. Then log on to the CraigGuard site and use this information to find reports about them posted by other users. This will help you avoid dealing with unscrupulous users who may try to cheat you, or worse, hurt you. Of course, if you have had problematic dealings with a Craigslist poster in the past, you should also share your experiences by creating a Buyer or Seller Report using the convenient online report form. This could spare others from the bad experience you have had and possibly keep someone safe.
