Generally, many people do not get involved in ministries and activities in the church because they are uninformed, lack a sense of belongingness and acceptance, do not have a model to follow or do not have time and resources. Church fundraising is a serious matter. If it is not well-planned, well understood and well implemented, it may pose possible complications between and among the congregation and the leaders that may even lead to serious damages as lawsuits and divisions.

In order to get over-all knowledge of the congregation’s opinion about the church fundraising project, make sure that the following have already occurred. It is summed up as PAUSE (plan, accept, understand, serve, and explain).

Planning involves prayer and preparation. See to it that the members have been praying and are actively aware of the church’s situation and needs. Make sure also that what is being aspired for is God’s will and not only a personal desire of the pastor or one of the members.

The feeling of acceptance is necessary for every member to feel that they are important and that they can do something for the church. Also, learn accept the people and the church’s limitations. This can come in the form of time, availability, skills and talents.

There should be understanding of everyone’s weaknesses and differences in orientation and values. Since no two individuals are the same, learn to adjust and complement each other in the church.

Service is one of Jesus’ habits when He was on earth. There should be an attitude and atmosphere of service in the church that should stream from the pastor down to the newest member. Humility is the best source of service.

When everything has been set in place, explain. Explain why there is a need for something thus fundraising should be one. Show the importance of the event and how each member can truly help. Let the people understand the basic issues concerning the fundraising event such as: a case or vision statement, objectives and goals of the project, plan and time table, budget, sacrificial giving and personal involvement, and other related issues.

When people have experienced true acceptance and fellowship in a local church, when they have sensed that they really belong, they will be willing to participate in every endeavor that they church undergoes including fundraising. If the pastor or the elders show by example that they are willing to sacrifice their own selves, their time, money and talent for the cause, the members would follow suit. Finally, when members fully understand the importance of the project or event, they will be encouraged to give their time, talent and treasure too.

Involvement in the church fundraising campaign can come naturally when members believed that they are part of something that would benefit the church, enlarge God’s kingdom on earth and give glory to God. There is no need of coaxing, trickery or bribery in this endeavor. Simply knowing the simple truth and believing the relevance and timeliness of matter can bring more support and participation from the pews.
