Although trials are inevitable events in the course of one’s relationship, it is important to know that a loving bond with one’s partner can withstand any problems one may encounter. But what happens when only one person is truly dedicated in saving the relationship? Is the partnership thus doomed to end?

According to counselors, there are a number of mistakes that people make in an attempt to try to save the relationship. First of which is to inform one’s partner that a change in habits and attitudes is in order for the partnership to work. If it is for the overall development and self-worth of one or both parties, then changing a very disastrous habit (i.e. gambling or alcohol addiction) is indeed necessary. But for the little quirks like nail biting and some other similar habits, it should not be that big of a deal in order for the relationship to thrive. This also goes hand-in-hand in wanting to change one’s partner.

Another common mistake is acting out in desperation in the hopes of saving the relationship. Love tends to make fools of even the brightest of minds, hence it is not common to find oneself acting out in a random and undignified manner when trying to hold on to the bond. This can only further magnify the problem and annoy one’s partner to no end.

That being said, there is a proper way of trying to save the relationship. By following these few simple guidelines, one can be assured of the correct decision in the long run.

Saving one’s relationship requires, first and foremost, a thorough analysis of one’s status and problems that led to this instance. Simply put, decide if the relationship is indeed worth saving. Pinpoint the problems (from both your partner’s and your ends) and work from there.

Communication is just as important in maintaining and fixing a relationship. After determining the problems, sit down with your partner and calmly discuss each other’s concerns. Listen and, as tempting as it may seem, avoid counteracting or defending oneself. Keep an open mind and remember that there may be grains of truth in what your partner is sharing.

Taking action is the next step. It may be in the form of obtaining more professional help in the form of a relationship counselor and the like. Or simply to try your hardest in trying to make the relationship work in the end. Take note of one’s progress and do not be discouraged when set backs happen. These are all natural occurrences and are quite normal during this period.

Saving the relationship may seem like hard work but is worth it in the end. Both parties come out stronger and better individuals because of the trials one faces.
